    flesh and bone ;; nolan

Post by Alaska Angelo on Thu Dec 21, 2017 8:55 pm

It had been a really stressful week for Ali. After the fight she had with her brother, they really hadn't spoken, and now that he was gone, she felt as if they were never going to reconcile. It broke her heart, she wished that she could go back in time. Though he infuriated her, she still loved her brother.

It was a Saturday night, and Ali was on her way to a house party, her arm linked in Nolan's. Sage wasn't going to be able to make it tonight and she was disappointed, but at least she had Nolan to keep her company.

It was nearing the end of November, and it was only getting colder and colder now. Soon their winter breaks would begin, and Ali wouldn't have to worry about school until the new year. She shivered when a gust of cold wind blew between them, and she instinctively drew closer to Nolan.

"I cannot wait to get inside," she said. "It's so cold!"

Of course, she stupidly didn't wear a coat, and honestly her entire ensemble did nothing to keep her warm. Ali was planning on going all out tonight, and she didn't want to worry about losing her coat.

    Tonight was the night.

There was no room for doubt in his mind anymore. Nolan had grown tired of waiting and had devised a flawless plan and he was sticking to it. No one was going to wander in and stop him, Sage wasn't around to hover. As Nolan walked down the chilly street with Ali wrapped around his arm, he could feel the warmth that escaped her all the way down to his bones.

Ali had changed Nolan's life. Nolan had no purpose, no meaning, little drive. He wandered about, looking down at all of the clio around him. But Ali brought in this unbelievable light -- she opened his eyes to beauty in the world, though he found little of it outside of her. He'd never felt anything for anyone, not respect or appreciation or gratitude, but for Ali he felt love and joy.

It was time for them to be together, finally. After all these years of dreaming and planning. He couldn't wait anymore.

I want to leave with her right now, he thought to his daemon. He was starting to realize just how close his future with Ali was, but it was still out of reach.

Patience, Roanoke reminded him. If the plan is to work, you must be patient.

Nolan knew this was true, but he was still frustrated. Nonetheless, he laughed lightly as Ali complained of the cold when she had barely covered herself. He moved his arm so it wrapped around her shoulders and she could come closer to his chest, rubbing his hand up and down her arm to facilitate some heat through friction.

"Don't you have a million coats?" he joked.

"I knoooow," Ali groaned. "But I didn't feel like dealing with one!" She laughed and leaned into him when he tried to warm her up. She was completely clueless as to what was in store for her tonight. She was ready to get drunk and enjoy her time with her friends.

When they arrived at the house party, they were greeted with a bunch of young clio, drinking, yelling, eating, laughing, and just enjoying their selves. Ali played beer pong with Nolan on her team, she got more and more drunk by the night, and was pulled in every direction. More shots, more pong, more wine, more beer. Throughout the night, she became more and more belligerent. Everything was going by like a blur. At some point she lost Nolan, but she couldn't remember how.

Eventually she sat herself down heavily on a couch, next to two clio making out, but she didn't really notice them anyway. She couldn't remember where she was. Who even owned this house? Who did she come with anyway? Sage? Nolan? Her roommate? She put a hand on her forehead, tilted her head back and closed her eyes. The world was spinning, and she was forgetting who she was.

Nolan didn't enjoy watching Ali get like this. If he could, he would have just escaped with her while she was sober -- but he was sure that she wouldn't have agreed to run away. He needed to show her, show her the life they could lead, right there in front of her. He wasn't sure she'd make the leap of faith with him, but he was sure that they were in love and that once reality hit her, she'd stay with him. Freedom and love were better than some random school and shallow friends who didn't care about her the way that Nolan did.

And so he watched her slowly deteriorate throughout the night until she was laying on a couch, practically incapable of doing anything. He leaned next to her, slipping his hands underneath her to carry her to his home.

"I'm sorry to do it like this," he murmured, though he was almost positive that she wouldn't remember this part. Some of her friends and acquaintances looked at him suspiciously, but he just nodded to them. "I'm gonna make sure she's okay," he said, and they all just let him take her away. Maybe they were too drunk to have suspicion, maybe they just didn't care, maybe they were just optimistic.

Whatever it was, none of them stopped Nolan from carrying Ali out of the house. It was honestly disgusting to Nolan, considering what could happen in this scenario. He would never touch Ali sexually without her permission, but how did all these clio know that? This was an overloridian's daughter, and nobody stopped him from carrying her out of this house party.

These kids are sick, he said as he walked down the street with Ali in his arms. Roanoke agreed, but was glad that this had happened the way it had. If anyone had stopped him, it could have been disastrous to his plans.

He looked down to her, feeling that he was a bit more whole with her here. He couldn't wait until they were finally together forever. This was all finally starting. He felt what he assumed to be joy in his heart.

Ali mumbled a feeble protest when Nolan lifted her into his arms, but she quickly realized it was him, despite her drunken haze. She allowed herself to be carried off into the cold night, eventually passing out against him, feeling safe.

    ---

When she awoke, she found herself in a dimly lit room, lying on an unfamiliar and uncomfortable bed. She sat up slowly, and was immediately met with a wave of nausea, and a pounding headache. She placed a hand on her forehead, shutting her eyes tightly and waited until the world stopped spinning.

She was still dressed in the outfit she wore to the party, but her boots had been taken off by whoever she went home with last night. She vaguely remembered somebody carrying her, but couldn't remember who.

It might have been Nolan, Abraham suggested from behind her.

Ali's heart sank. Did they have sex last night? She started to panic as she tried to recall what had happened last night. Her body didn't feel like they had had sex, but she still couldn't be certain. She surmised that she must be at Nolan's. She was confused though, this place didn't look like a dorm room, but she supposed that she never actually had come to his place. Maybe he lived off campus. But how could he afford that? He told her himself that him and his mother didn't have a lot of money. Suddenly she felt like she was going to puke, and looked around frantically for something to puke in. She spotted a bucket that Nolan must have left for her, next to the bed on the floor, and she reached for it quickly, puking immediately as soon as it was close enough to her face. When she finished dry heaving, she heard movement from outside of the darkened doorway that was directly across from the bed she sat in. Gingerly, she set the barf bucket back down and swung her feet over the side of the bed. When her feet touched the floor, she felt like she was going to puke again. The floor was dirt, and when she reached out with her hand to trace her fingers across the wall she realized that the walls were dirt too. The room was dimly lit, because there were no windows. Ali and her daemon were under the ground. Her first thought was that somebody must have kidnapped her for ransom. She was an overloridians daughter. But whoever had taken her, was taking care of her. Why would a kidnapper provide her with a bed and a barf bucket? Something seemed more off than it should.

"H-hello?" she cautiously called out. "Who's there?"

She knew it was stupid of her, but she walked toward the weirdly shaped hole in the wall of her new prison, where she heard more movement coming from the other side. She heard the blood rushing through her ears, her heart felt like it was going to beat right out of her chest. On the other side of the doorway, was another dirt room, but what scared her the most was Nolan. Nolan, her supposed friend, had brought her here. He had gotten close to her, and then took her. But why? She felt so confused, scared, and betrayed.

"Nolan?" She asked, timidly. "W-what's going on?"

Nolan was kneeling over a handmade fire pit, stirring some liquid in a small stone pot suspended over the flame. He had anticipated that Ali may wake up soon, and had started to make some soup for her to eat. He'd already snacked on a couple things he'd prepared in the bunker and wasn't hungry, but he held in his other hand a small stone mug that he had brewed tea in.

Ali found herself in the same room as Nolan shortly after vomiting, and he was happy to see her, though she looked admittedly unwell. What could he expect? She was probably incredibly hungover and disoriented.

"Hey there," he said softly, standing straight up and turning toward her to greet her. "How are you feeling? I'm making some soup in case your stomach is still upset. It's an old Adhbhar recipe I tracked down -- I wonder if you've ever had it."

He paused for a second before realizing how rude of a host he was being. "Please, feel free to sit," he said, motioning toward a stool made from stone and layers of softer dirt. "I'm sorry this place isn't more comfortable, but we won't be here for long. Where we're going will better fit your needs, I promise you. You'll love it." He held a smile on his face that to normal clio was probably unsettling, but this was genuine happiness. Everything was finally starting!

Ali just stood there in the doorway, taking no actions to move at all. The look on his face scared her. Where was he planning on taking her? Nothing was making any sense to her, why was he doing this? So many questions were running through her head at a million miles a minute. Ali crossed her arms over her stomach, to try and subside the nausea, and her nerves. She always heard horror stories where young girls and children alike were snatched away, only to be found dead. Was she going to die? She didn’t realize that she was silently crying until she reflexively sniffled.

Sage had been right all along. When he saw Nolan watching her sleep at the camping trip, she had just brushed it off. He was just drunk, she had said, probably wanted to get laid. All this time, he had plans to take her away, but for what? She still couldn’t figure it out. She was so scared.

“Am I going to die?” Was the only question she managed to whimper.

Though the room was dark, she tried to find some method of escape. Any kind of light source that led to the outside, but much to her dismay there was nothing. No light source other than the fire pit and a few candles. She had no idea how deep underground they were, what time it was, or even if they were still on Martha’s Vineyard. She was trapped down here, with somebody who she once thought was her friend.

Nolan's eyebrows raised in concern for Ali as she started to silently cry in front of him. Had he said something wrong?

I told you staying here was a bad idea, he said immediately to Roanoke, who brushed him off.

You had no other viable option. Alaska was bound to be surprised -- give her time to warm up to the situation.

Nolan knew Roanoke was right, as disparaging as that was. He'd like to think that there was something he could do to make the plan move forward more effortlessly, but he knew the reality of it. Somewhere in his deranged thoughts, he even considered what this must be like for her. While to Nolan this was the manifestation of their intertwined destinies, to her this may look and seem like...a kidnapping.

And, when she asked if she was going to die, he was assured of her line of thought.

"Oh no no," he offered in a hushed voice, the softest he could muster. "Gods, no. I would never want to hurt you, let alone kill you -- and I would never let anyone lay a hand on you, Ali. You're safe with me."

He felt the urge to stir the soup again, but felt that taking his attention away from her at this exact moment may come across as dismissive. He had to be so careful of his every move now, and in such a different way than before. But, for Ali it was worth it.

Nolan’s response did not reassure Ali at all. If anything, it just made her more frightened. She pulled one of her hands into the sleeve of her oversized sweater, and wiped away her tears. He said that she was safe with him, but she never felt so unsafe in her entire life.

Ali, Abraham said soothingly. Just relax, we’re going to get through this together, okay?

Ali’s daemon felt so helpless and small. The only thing he could do was at least try and calm his clio down.

Ali closed her eyes, and the world began to spin again. Nausea bubbled up in her stomach so rapidly that she was afraid she wouldn’t find a place to puke fast enough. A gag-like sound erupted from her throat, and she threw a hand over her mouth. She tried to turn and run back to the bedroom where she left the bucket, but it was too late. She emptied whatever was left inside of her rumbley stomach, and then some. Ali slowly dropped to her hands and knees, retching and spitting ever so gracefully onto the dirt floor.

It felt like an eternity, leaning on the dirty floor, dry heaving, with vomit dripping from her chin. If this had been happening anywhere else she probably would have found it humorous how helpless she probably seemed, but instead it only made her cry harder. She allowed her tears to fall freely now, as she curled up into the fetal position, holding her stomach tightly and gently rocking back and forth.

Her emotions were going haywire, but she had no idea how to cope with this situation. Not even Abraham could say comforting words, he knew they were both in a lot of trouble.

Nolan watched the entire series of events unfold in front of him, frozen in place as it all happened. He was never much of the comforting type, and felt it may make her more uncomfortable if he tried to comfort her now (especially since he likely wasn't good at it).

So he gave up on the soup for now, taking it off the flame and setting it on the ground (away from the vomiting Ali). He placed his fingers against the wall, pulling out a hand-crafted stone lid for the pot that fit perfectly. He wanted to make sure no bugs crawled in -- how unappetizing that would be.

He kept the fire going, mostly so they could see one another, and took off a sweater he was wearing to lay over her body. Without even looking at it, Nolan started to clean up the mess with his eilemaiden. The spot where Ali had vomited softly vibrated, the soiled bits trading places with unearthed bits that moved above. In no time, one wouldn't be able to tell that Ali had even been sick there.

"Well, we may be surrounded by dirt, but at least it's easy cleanup," he offered lightly as he bent down next to her. "Ali," he almost whispered, thinking he was helping. "I promise not to hurt you. That was and will never be my intention." Looking at her so close, she truly did look a mess. He pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and offered it to her, in case she wanted to clean her face up a bit.

Ali’s body tensed when she felt the weight of Nolan’s sweater on her back. She glanced up when she heard the soft rustling of the dirt in front of her and immediately felt cold. Of course he’d build an underground bunker. He was Adhbhar. They were surrounded by the element that he controlled. While she was sure there wasn’t even the slightest breeze blowing through this makeshift dungeon that she could even dream of manipulating.

She slowly sat up when Nolan kneeled beside her. The way he said her name, it was so unsettling. A chill ran down her spine. She stared at him through half-lidded eyes, her head resting on the dirt wall behind her. She barely comprehended a word he said. All she could focus on was the fact that she was trapped under the ground with a man who could over power her easily. Ali didn’t believe him, she was not safe with him.

Hesitantly, she reached out with a shaky hand and took the handkerchief that he offered her. She didn’t trust him, no, but she did feel disgusting with all the tears, snot, and vomit on her face. She took her time, wiping away her tears first before tending to the more unpleasant parts of her face. Once finished, she held it back out to him, only dropping her hand awkwardly, remembering what was all over it. She thought it funny that she was still trying to be polite with her kidnapper.

“Nolan,” Ali said, her voice raspy. “I want to go home.”

Nolan looked away as Ali cleaned herself up, wanting to be polite. When she handed the handkerchief back to him, he carefully tossed it into a corner where a few other dirty linens were already laying. He turned back to her as she pleaded to go home, and he nodded agreeably.

"Yes, of course," he said, deciding not to touch her as she was obviously uncomfortable with it (though this made him pretty upset, he let it go for now). "I'll take you home, it's just a matter of time. I'd never keep you underground longer than necessary -- you can't even use your eilemaiden down here! I created this space for our safety. But we'll be gone from here soon."

He was being cryptic, but this wasn't intentional. He just sort of assumed that she knew what the plan was, or where they were going, or what she was doing here. She had to know, right? She'd made so many passes at him -- it had to be because she remembered him from so long ago. It was impossible for a love like this to be one-sided, and Nolan didn't have an inch of doubt inside him. She was just confused.

"Why don't you get back in bed and rest? I've got soup ready for you whenever you're able to eat. Maybe once you're all rested, I can tell you about the neighborhood." Of course, he meant the neighborhood he'd lived in for years and that she'd be moving to, but that seemed like unnecessary additives to the conversation at the moment.

Something told Ali that the home Nolan was talking about was definitely not her dorm room or even the estate back in Adhbhar. No, he wanted to take her somewhere else. She and Abraham both agreed that Nolan wasn’t going to hurt her, yet. How long before he did though? She just had to play his game, and cooperate until she could make a break for it.

Ali nodded lightly in agreement when he mentioned sleep, but made no move to stand and go back to the bed. She was afraid to go to sleep in this little dirt dungeon with him. Everything about this place creeped her out, especially the clio who made it, but she was exhausted. Her head was still pounding, her stomach still queasy. A nap would probably do wonders.

I think it’ll be okay, Abraham said reassuringly. And when you wake up, we can come up with a plan together.

Feeling a little hopeful, Ali stood slowly. “I think I will go back to bed,” she said softly. She wasn’t sure if she should say more, so she didn’t and shuffled back to the room that held the bed she woke up in. She crawled in and curled up beneath the blanket. Ali wondered if Nolan slept in there with her last night, and her skin crawled. She tossed and turned for a few minutes until she was able to finally fall into a fitful sleep.

Nolan nodded as Ali announced that she'd be going back to sleep. He thought that would be best for her. She needed all the energy and health that she could muster for their move -- this was a big moment for her and he didn't want her memory to be clouded by being hungover. That was a small factor for why he'd created the bunker anyhow, since he figured she'd be like this after drinking so much at the party. Not the smoothest plan, but it seemed to be going well so far.

While Ali slept, Nolan cleaned up some areas of the small bunker to try and make it perfect. He made sure all of the walls were exceptionally flat, that any dirt that had been kicked up from their movements were tidied up. Still, this didn't seem like enough -- the two of them would likely have to stay here for a couple more days before making the move to Adhbhar, and Ali just didn't seem satisfied.

Nolan wanted to leave, to grab some flowers for her. But what if she woke up and panicked? She still seemed pretty confused about the plan (he hadn't exactly explained it well to her) and might try to leave and find him again.

If you're quick, it should be alright, Roanoke said with a small nod. It would be hard for her to leave anyhow. If she manages it, she won't get far.

Nolan frowned as he stood in the doorway of the room that Ali slept in. He didn't want to leave her, but he thought the flowers might help. With a silent nod, he decided to head out and fetch some goodies for her, leaving her alone as she slept.

Hopefully she'll still be sleeping by the time we return, he said to Roanoke as they departed. I want to surprise her with the flowers.

While Nolan worked outside of the room she slept in, Ali dreamt of being buried alive by him. She awoke with a start right as the dirt filled her screaming mouth. She could sense him staring at her from the doorway, but she didn’t dare move. She didn’t want him knowing she was awake. When she heard him walk away, she silently slipped out of bed and crept toward the doorway to watch him. Maybe she could attack him from behind, knock him out or something.

To her surprise, he started climbing up a stone ladder that she hadn’t noticed before. Ali couldn’t tell if he had just recently made it, or if it had been there all along, and she had just been too sick and shaken to notice. When she could no longer see him, a beam of light shone down from the hole that he was climbing out of. Her heart began to flutter, her eyebrows raised in excitement. She rushed toward the light without thinking, only to be severely disappointed when the light was gone once she reached it. She groaned and looked up, desperate for any kind of means to escape. She climbed the ladder, and was met with only more disappointment and despair. What was once a hole was now only solid rock and dirt. She rested her forehead against one of the steps on the ladder, crying softly.

Eventually, Ali got herself back together and climbed back down the ladder, devising a plot. Now all she had to do was wait.

    —-

Ali waited at the bottom of the ladder for what felt like an eternity before she finally heard the shuffling of dirt above her. She bit her bottom lip, her heart pounding. She heard him stepping on the ladder, he began to climb down. As soon as she could reach it, Ali latched onto his ankle with both hands and pulled as hard as she could. Nolan fell, like she’d hoped. It all happened so fast, she couldn’t even process what was going on. Nolan was on the ground, she was flying up, up, up, but he was faster. Her head hit the dirt hard, and she bit her tongue in the process. The coppery taste of blood filled her mouth, and she spit. An animal-like yelp came from her mouth and she groaned the word, “no.” Ali had failed, she had been so close, but she hadn’t been fast enough.

Before climbing back into his underground temporary home, Nolan and Roanoake took a good look at the bushel of flowers he'd hand-picked for Ali. The thinnest smile crossed his face.

"I'm fairly pleased with this collection," he stated matter-of-factly. Roanoke nodded, impressed at Nolan's eye for color and placement. She felt that Ali might start to appreciate him and his efforts with this gift.

With that, he lifted the layer of rock that kept Ali hidden and safe and started to head back down to greet her. His heart fluttered as he wondered if she'd be awake already. While he'd be happy to see her, he'd prefer her to wake up to the flowers beside her -- it seemed more dramatic and thoughtful that way.

Instead of literally anything he expected, Nolan's ankle was pulled with a surprising and sudden force that knocked him directly off the ladder as he made his way down. His first thought was that somehow, someone had gotten in and found Ali. Had they hurt her?!

"Alaska!" he yelled immediately, dropping the flowers as he slammed against the dirt floor. He had yelped her name out of fear that she had been captured by a stranger, but instead...

Nolan's eyes widened as the world around him seemed to move in slow motion. Ali, his love, the woman who held his heart so tightly with her care, was flying upwards. She was flying...away?

Nolan, she's trying to escape! Roanoke said, reacting much quicker than Nolan initially. This snapped Nolan out of whatever mindset he was in, and he immediately and effortlessly retrieved her.

He now stood over her body, locks of hair covering parts of his face as he looked at Ali, thoroughly shocked and confused. Ali had spit out blood, something he'd never intended for her. He'd meant to keep her safe from harm, why was she instigating him? Did she want him to hurt her?

"I don't understand," he said, looking down at her with his fists clenched. There was a glimpse of sadness in his face, but a raw and untapped anger seemed to fill his usually-monotonous expression as well. "I leave to get you flowers and you try to escape? Do you want to foil this entire plan, Alaska?!"

He breathed in sharply, trying to cool himself down. A small clump of dirt surrounded the ends of the flowers' stems and moved them in front of Ali's face as Nolan closed his eyes and controlled his breathing more intentionally.

"These are for you, love," he breathed out, opening his eyes again to look down at her. "If you do as I say and follow the plan, you'll have nothing to worry about. No more pain, no more blood. I told you, I'm not going to hurt you. Please don't make me."

Ali tried to wrench her body away when she felt his hands on her, but he was much stronger. However, it didn't stop her from struggling. He got her down from the ladder with ease, letting her go roughly and standing over her, her back against the dirt wall. The look on his face made her blood run cold. She heard him talk about a plan, what plan?

"Nolan," she whimpered. "You know who my mother is, if it's money you want she can get you all of it." Ali wished the wall would suck her in. "I can't stay under here," she was crying now. "I just can't."

She was panicking, shaking. She winced when the flowers floated toward her, only to grow extremely confused. Flowers? What for? Was he...did he...was he trying to court her? Everything made sense now. The way he acted around her, the weird way he acted during the camping trip, it had been jealousy. She had caught him staring at her multiple times, but she stupidly just thought he was horny, or maybe even just quirky. Ali even had led him on, but not on purpose. She was always naturally flirty, with all kinds of guys. It was just her personality, she never thought anything of it. Ali was starting to feel sick to her stomach again.

"Nolan," she said cautiously, not taking the flowers. "Why are you keeping me here?"

Nolan barely even heard Ali's irrelevant comment about her mother's money. Why would he want money?

What is she talking about? Nolan thought, confused. He quickly moved on when she asked what was going on, though. He slowed down his thoughts, breathed out again heavily, and nodded. That was a decent question. He somehow kept forgetting that maybe she wasn't as intuitive as he thought -- which was fine, he loved her anyway -- and she might need some more details.

"That's my fault, I apologize," he said, setting the flowers down on the ground. He sat down as well, crossing his legs casually. "Ali...I haven't been as honest with you as I would have liked, but you have to understand -- this was the only way. My name isn't actually Nolan, it's Anders. And I've been in love with you for quite a long time."

His fingers were fidgeting and he was cracking some of his knuckles out of nervousness. This was a big moment for him, saying these words that described the deep-rooted feelings that had influenced his actions for years. "I created Nolan, a student at Redfern, in order to reintroduce myself to you. But we met a long time ago, and you haven't left my mind since. Not once. I think -- no, I know that we're meant to be."

He cleared his throat a little due to a slight itch. "I have an apartment back in Adhbhar waiting for us. We'll be safe there, and can finally be together. But the timing has to be right, so we can't leave just yet. But I promise, I'll get you out of here soon, love." His face looked less angry now, and more vulnerable. He was finally being genuine, and felt an immense sense of relief. His whole demeanor seemed to shift slightly (but there was still something off about him, definitely).

Ali wanted to scream. She wanted to claw at Nolan’s face. She wanted to cry, to puke. She wanted to disappear. She didn’t remember meeting this guy ever, in her entire life. How long ago did they meet? He’d been obsessed with her all this time? Had he been stalking her? What else hasn’t he told her?

“Anders,” she whispered, in disbelief. All this time and he wasn’t even who he said he was. How did Redfern not pick up on this? How was he able to disguise himself so easily?

Hope fluttered in her stomach when he mentioned that his apartment was in Adhbhar. So close to home! They would have to travel there eventually, if he was going to keep his word. Maybe there was still a chance to escape! She just had to buy her time, and play along with his “plan.”
