    tell me [kavi]

Post by Emery Lorenz on Tue Jan 09, 2018 1:09 am

Emery seemed to finally be connecting with someone other than his family in Dian since meeting Kavi. The two had been seeing each other quite frequently lately, and Emery was really enjoying his company. He'd shown Kavi some of his favorite places -- bars, parks, a huge abandoned junkyard -- and they had just met up at a cafe/bakery that he hadn't shown Kavi yet. He hoped Kavi was doing some exploring of his own...he was running out of places nearby to show him (and he wasn't about to start taking him to places of his childhood just yet).

After paying for his and Kavi's food, Emery led the way to an empty table and set down his plate, which carried a large croissant and a handmade fruit tart. Alongside that, he set down his large espresso drink that had some intricate design in the foam. He almost didn't want to drink it and mess it up.

He took his coat off and put it on the back of his chair before sitting down and sipping on his coffee (he didn't care that much about the design, really). He'd been thinking about having a particular conversation with Kavi, now that they'd spent a bit more time together.

Originally, Emery had no intention of bringing up his family anytime soon (or, if possible, ever) but he'd noticed that Kavi had also not brought up his family. This seemed odd to Emery, and though it was probably rude, he wanted to bring it up. He hoped dearly that this wasn't a touchy subject, like that Kavi's entire family had been slaughtered by bandits or something...but he knew that was unlikely (especially since Kavi seemed relatively stable) and Emery was just plain curious.

"So," he started, tearing off a crumby part of his croissant and putting it in his mouth as he continued to talk, "are you some lost and lonely orphan or do you have a family you just don't like to talk about?" He figured he'd get right to the point. He smiled a little, mostly because he had a family he didn't like to talk about, and he knew Kavi probably noticed that Emery hadn't brought up his family either.

He had to admit, he wouldn't even think about having this conversation if he wasn't genuinely interested in keeping Kavi around a bit longer. Emery had a lot of hookups in his time (even casual ones that didn't revolve around money or exchanging of goods), but Kavi was interesting in ways that those clio weren't. If he was going to stick around, maybe it was worth bringing it up now just to get all of the judgement out of the way, right?

After a rocky start, Kavi's move to Dian had finally started to shape itself into everything he'd hoped it would be. Amazing new experiences, meeting types of clio he'd never met before, seeing things from a new point of view, gaining confidence. And he owed a lot of that to Emery, the incredibly attractive and charming boy that Kavi had met by chance during his first couple days in the city. They had been spending a lot of time together, going on--dates? were they dates? Kavi considered them dates--to all these cool places Emery knew.

Today they were at a locally owned cafe with artisan baked goods. Kavi opened his mouth to object when Emery paid for both their meals, but Emery just handed off the money without a second thought so he didn't. Kavi made a mental note to pay for the next date.

He blew on his hot tea and was about to take a sip when Emery asked,

Emery wrote:"So, are you some lost and lonely orphan or do you have a family you just don't like to talk about?"

"Oh," Kavi said quietly. He had sort of been waiting for this topic to come up, but had been enjoying not talking about it up until now. He had liked being treated as just a regular guy, and hoped that Emery wouldn't treat him any differently because of who his parents were. "It's just, well--I'm kinda surprised you didn't recognize my last name, but--my mom is sort of the overloridian of Adhbhar.

"I wasn't trying to hide it or anything, it just never came up," he added quickly, even though Emery hadn't even reacted yet.

Emery choked on the coffee he'd just started to sip on again, and ended up spitting some out on the plate in front of him.

"Fuck's sake," he managed to say between coughs as he got the rest of the coffee out from his lungs. "So you're like, filthy fucking rich?" he asked, taking one of the napkins on the table to wipe off his mouth and the plate. "Why did you move to the slums of Dian, of all places?"

He finally composed himself after the surprise fit he'd had. He hadn't recognized Kavi's last name, mainly because he hadn't received a proper education and knew barely anything about any of the overloridians (past or present) or their families. They honestly seemed like an abstract concept to him -- some holier-than-thou rich clio who won fate's lottery and got to live a life of luxury.

He couldn't believe this just 'hadn't come up,' or that he'd met one of the overloridian's kids by accident! What if something had happened to him?? Gods, what the hell. Emery was so taken aback by Kavi's answer, which was not something he'd expected to hear at all. He couldn't even imagine the spoils of growing up in such a way.

Kavi winced at Emery's over-the-top reaction. It was exactly why he hadn't wanted to talk about it in the first place. Gods he hoped this wouldn't color the way Emery saw him from here on out. "My parents are," he said, monotone, in response to the filthy fucking rich thing. He hadn't taken any money from them since he'd moved out.

"I just...wanted to live here," he said lamely. "I wanted to be on my own. Make my own way, I guess."

Ugh, it sounded so dumb when he said it out loud. He supposed it really wouldn't make sense to anyone why he would choose "the slums" over a lavish mansion, but that rich lifestyle just wasn't him. He was happier here, making his own money and his own decisions.

"I wanted to be on my own. Make my own way, I guess."

"That's..." Emery paused. He wanted to say that it was stupid, a ridiculous concept, probably an unnecessary phase that Kavi would go through before running back to the luxuries of his childhood.

Ultimately though, it was mostly just difficult for Emery to understand. Everyone he knew wanted to hit the jackpot, make money, and live like Kavi's family surely did -- he'd never heard of anyone intentionally doing the opposite.

"...confusing," he finally admitted, picking at his food. He'd noticed the change in Kavi's demeanor, which he felt bad about. But he also didn't want to play this off as something normal to find out about someone you've been talking to for a bit.

"What was so attractive to you about Dian?" he asked, genuinely trying to understand why Kavi was here. Maybe clio outside of Dian didn't understand how decrepit it could be...he hoped that Kavi hadn't put himself here just to experience being poor. Even the idea of that felt insulting, like he was just some part of a voyeuristic trip. Then again, Emery didn't exactly learn to like rich clio, so he was a bit biased in his assumptions about Kavi's intentions.

The look on Emery's face as he paused immediately put Kavi on the defensive. There was a flash of judgment across his face, but then he only said that Kavi's explanation was "confusing." Kavi relaxed at that. Whatever Emery thought of his choices, at least he seemed willing to put in some effort to understand instead of just writing them off as stupid.

Emery wrote:"What was so attractive to you about Dian?"

"Well, part of it was the job thing. There's a high demand for Nadar clio since there's so few of us here," he said, looking down at and unnecessarily stirring his tea. "I also just...like the city. It's more interesting here."

Emery nodded along, listening to Kavi. Emery would have never pegged him as a materialistic, superficial, snobby rich clio before knowing about Kavi's family's influence and prominence. It wasn't like everything about him suddenly changed.

Regardless, there were things that Kavi would never be able to understand about Emery, his family, or his life because of this. Emery didn't consider this to be a dealbreaker, but he had a feeling it may cause some rifts in their ability to relate to one another.

"Dian isn't all bad," he said, agreeing. "I guess I've just seen the worst parts, ya know?" He sipped on his coffee again before finally making eye contact with Kavi, which he'd been avoiding.

"I grew up with nothing," he said, not trying to make Kavi feel bad (though he was aware that clio with money usually felt guilty when clio without money mentioned it) but to try and open up, since he'd cornered Kavi into doing so. "Nothing but a ton of siblings, addicts for parents, and more responsibility than a kid should ever have."

Emery looked down, sighing. "So I guess I've just always envied clio like you," he said with a shrug.

"Oh," Kavi said softly, meeting Emery's eyes before looking back down at his drink uncomfortably. While he'd known Emery obviously wasn't wealthy, he hadn't realized just how...uh, un-wealthy he was before now. Addicts for parents. Kavi couldn't even begin to imagine. "I didn't realize. I'm sorry."

He didn't even know what he was apologizing for. That Emery had gone through a rough childhood? That Kavi hadn't somehow realized it on his own? That Kavi had lived a life of luxury up until now while Emery dealt with "more responsibility than a kid should ever have"? None of those things was his fault, but he still had a guilty feeling in his gut.

"But it seems like you're doing okay for yourself now," he offered. Emery lived on his own and had a job, and it didn't seem like he was struggling much. "Do you...still talk to your family?"
