This was it. Today was the day Theo had been waiting for for literal years. Well, sorta.

Adoption had never been on Theo's mind. He'd never wanted a family, and he'd definitely never wanted a family like the one he ended up with. No, all Theo had wanted was to age out of the system and settle. He wanted freedom, wanted to be alone and to be able to make his own choices.

Though he hadn't settled yet, he had finally accomplished one thing: made his adoptive "father" so mad that he sent him away to boarding school. If Theo had to spend the rest of his unsettled days anywhere, he was so fucking glad it was here. Redfern, the closest to freedom he'd ever taste before his stupid daemon would settle and get him out of here for good.

Sure, he was leaving the few friends he'd made in the last two years in Earalas behind, but what did that matter. He'd never really cared about them anyway--they'd just been a distraction to help him pass the time. He liked it better on his own; he didn't need anybody else.

Except a roommate, Panda piped from the air where she currently hovered as a hummingbird. You gotta have one of those.

Theo shrugged from his spot on his bed. The roommate had yet to show up, and Theo was hoping that either meant the dude wasn't coming back to Redfern, or that he wouldn't be in the room often. Either of those two things would be fine with Theo, honestly.

Whatever. Until then, he was totally content with just laying on his bed. His bed. His own bed. He'd explore the campus later.

Kavi wasn't going to miss this place, he decided. He was already planning on taking some weekends to go to the mainland and look for a job, and as soon as he found one, he was out of here. Now that he was finally settled, there was nothing stopping him from finally being able to take some control of his life and make his own choices.

Your mom and dad won't be happy, Polaris said. Allie neither.

That's why I haven't told them yet, Kavi replied. It was easier to ask for forgiveness than permission, after all. Besides, happy about it or not, it wasn't like they could stop him now that he'd settled.

It almost felt pointless to even be here, but Kavi just couldn't up and move to the mainland on his own without a job, so he'd have to stick it out for a few more weeks. He made his way to the dorm he'd been assigned and opened the door.

Oh. He had a new roommate. A kid he'd never seen before, not even in any of his classes. Interesting. "Oh, hey," he greeted, carrying his stuff over to the unclaimed half of the room. "I'm Kavi. Are you new at Redfern?" He wondered why anyone would start here so late.

Theo sat up when he heard the door open. He had been dozing off a little, as he reveled in his freedom. A boy with shaggy sandy blonde hair walked in carrying a bunch of stuff. So much for the no roommate thing.

Kavi wrote:I'm Kavi. Are you new at Redfern?

Theo gave the bro nod when Kavi greeted him. "Theo. And yeah, I guess." He didn't really want to talk about why this was his first year, or what had happened to him prior, so he hoped this Kavi guy wasn't the inquisitive sort.

He noticed his shoes in the middle of the floor, where he'd left them upon first inspection of the room, so he hopped off the bed to move them out of the way. "Sorry," he said. "I kinda passed out after I finished unpacking my stuff."

"You're good," Kavi replied as Theo got up to move his shoes. He was, in fact, curious about why this was Theo's first year, but the short, vague answer made it pretty obvious that Theo didn't want to elaborate. Kavi knew was it was like to be peppered with questions about things he didn't wanna talk about, so he didn't ask anything else.

"If I'm being honest, I might not even be here for very long," he said. "At Redfern, I mean. This is my last year."

You haven't told your family, but you tell some stranger you just met. Polaris shook her head from where she'd perched on a nearby bookshelf.

Yeah, well. It wasn't like this stranger was gonna call up his parents and spill the big secret. He just figured he'd let the guy know he might not have a roommate for very long, and hey, who knew, maybe Theo would have some recommendations on where to look for a place to live. Kavi wondered where he was from and what eilemaiden he was. "So where are you from?" he asked.

"Really?" Theo asked. He was assuming Kavi was sixteen, like himself, which meant he technically had two more years to go. "What, are you dropping out or something?" He hated himself for the small talk, but it was definitely intriguing, especially considering that would be the ultimate freedom. No loser dad-thing, no rules, no school.

Then Kavi asked him about where he was from and he instantly wished he'd squelched the conversation as soon as it'd begun. "Lilycove," he answered without a moment's hesitation. Earalas was just another blip on the map, but it'd come and gone in two years, and as soon as possible Theo would make sure it never appeared on the map again.

"Well...yeah. I guess I am," Kavi replied. He didn't really like the term 'dropping out', it made it sound like he was giving up because of bad grades or something. In fact, he had all A's and B's. He wasn't leaving school because he was giving up on something, he was leaving school so he could go start something better. More worthwhile. He shrugged. "I just settled a few weeks ago, so I was thinking of looking for a job on the mainland somewhere."

    "Lilycove,"

"Oh yeah? Do you like it there?" Kavi asked. He'd been looking into Dian lately, but it was so expensive. Then again, Lilycove probably wouldn't be much cheaper. Kavi didn't want to rely on any of his parents' money, so he'd have to find somewhere he could afford on his own.

True. Theo would need a job if he wanted to ditch school and his dad-thing. Maybe that was something he could look into, now that he was away from said dad-thing.

"That's cool. If I could settle already I think I'd like to do something similar." Maybe because Kavi had just recently settled, Theo didn't seem as embarrassed telling him that he, himself, hadn't settled yet. It was usually something he kept private. "What kind of jobs can you even get without graduating?"

He shrugged off the question about Lilycove. "It's alright. Same as anywhere else, I think." In actuality he hadn't been there in many years, but he felt zero motivation to tell this Kavi guy that.

Kavi glanced up in surprise when Theo said he hadn't settled yet, but quickly hid it. He supposed he shouldn't be that surprised. Lots of kids didn't settle before their sixth year. "Oh, lots of things," he said. "A trade. Join the military. Something eilemaiden specific." Funnily enough, though Kavi had chosen Nadar as his eilemaiden, he didn't actually have much of a desire to live on Nadar Isle. He loved feeling connected to nature through his eilemaiden, but he still saw himself living in a city, where he could make a name for himself that wasn't automatically connected to his family.

"Oh yeah? I've heard it's nice there," Kavi said. "I want to move to a city. Not a lot of Nadar clio do, so hey, maybe there'll be more job openings for someone like me." He wondered what eilemaiden Theo planned on joining. Kavi felt like he met so few fellow Nadar clio.

Theo scooted back on his bed to rest his back against the headboard, so he didn't notice Kavi's tick at the unsettled proclamation, which was good because it would have made him both defensive and embarrassed. Instead he just nodded at Kavi's job ideas.

He definitely wanted to live in Lilycove, but with no money that'd probably be hard. "I'm gonna settle as Deilig," he said. "I dunno if that can really help with any job." His father had been Deilig, his mother Solas. He went back and forth between which of the two he was going to settle as, but lately Deilig had seemed more appealing. "Maybe a factory or something." Extra hands seemed like a good thing for something like that.

Kavi hated to admit it, but he had a sort of involuntary negative reaction when clio mentioned Deilig. He'd had other students taunt him before about his father's old allegiance to Deilig at the beginning of the war, and it had made him want to distance himself as much as possible from the eilemaiden. But he knew other clio didn't share his hangups, so he couldn't blame someone else for choosing it as an eilemaiden.

"Or pretty much anything that requires a night shift," he said. Many of the nighttime security guards at Redfern were Deilig. Though Theo was right, factories probably hired Deilig workers as well. Factory work just seemed like it would be boring, though.

"Hey, that's a good idea," Theo said. Seeing in the dark would be perfect for a security guard or something. "I bet something like that wouldn't require a degree, either."

They sat in comfortable silence for awhile, Kavi putting his stuff away and Theo sitting on his bed, thinking about the future. Eventually Theo asked, "Hey, do you know anywhere around here to get something to eat?"

"Well, the food on campus all sucks," Kavi said, glad to talk about something other than eilemaidens now. "There's a place in town with pretty good pizza." He would say that he and Theo should go out have a couple drinks to mourn the start of the semester, but Theo was unsettled. Bummer. "A lot of students go there the night before classes, if you're interested in meeting anyone. You know anyone else here, yet?" Started at Redfern at sixteen would be rough. Nearly all the students in their year already know each other and had formed their little groups. Kavi himself mostly hung out with his fellow athletes, though he wasn't super committed.

"Nada," Theo said before immediately amending, "Oh, I mean, a couple." Somehow he'd completely forgotten the spawn of Jack's sister and brother-in-law...who also happened to somehow be related to the one clio from Earalas he would actually consider hanging out with, Nat.

"Nat Sterling is kinda cool," he said. "D'you know her at all?"

"What?" Kavi asked in surprise. He hadn't expected Theo to already know one of the other overloridian kids, especially since he hadn't recognized Kavi as one. Not that Kavi was complaining about that, he liked it better that way. "Yeah, I do. Both her and her sister. They actually used to come over to my house sometimes when we were little."

While Kavi didn't have anything personal against Natalie Sterling, he couldn't really say he was particularly fond of her. She was one of those kids who was always getting into trouble, but always getting away with it because of who her dad was. Mollie Sterling, on the other hand, he didn't mind so much. She was pretty attractive, too.

"I've hung out with Mollie more than Natalie, though."

"They did?" he asked, fishing for information. Theo had expected Kavi to maybe have seen Nat around school, but he hadn't expected them to have some sort of childhood-friend past.

He didn't feel like telling Kavi how he knew Nat and Mollie, but he felt like he needed to know how Kavi knew them. Kavi had seemed surprised that Theo knew them, too, so hopefully his own shock wouldn't be too weird. "How did you guys know each other?"

Well, it was bound to come up at some point...

"Our parents worked together sometimes," he said shortly, knowing that Theo would most likely put two and two together from there. Who else would have a close working relationship with an overloridian, but another overloridian? He deflected the question. "What about you? How do you know Natalie?"

"Small world," Theo said, actually not putting two and two together right away. "And they're like, family friends or something," Theo said of his own relationship with the Sterlings.

"Let's go get some of that food you mentioned," he added as his stomach growled. When Jack had dropped him off the dad-thing had wanted to take Theo out for lunch, but he'd insisted he wasn't hungry and just wanted to be left alone. Only one of those things had been true, though. "Maybe not the pizza thing, though. Is there anything a little quieter?"

...Or maybe he wouldn't put two and two together from there! Well, Kavi certainly wasn't going to complain about that. And Theo didn't seem to want to dwell on it either, considering how quickly he'd changed the subject.

"Uh, well there's this cafe not too far from campus," he said.

And so the two roommates went to go get some food and continue to talk about things that weren't their families.
