    i'm a fool [mollie]

Post by Kristo Lilas on Thu Aug 03, 2017 10:34 pm

"You have a good day now," Kris said to a student that had stopped him in the hallway on his way back to his office. He loved when students were excited about his courses -- it made him feel fulfilled and like he was doing something good with his time and his life's work. Fortunately, he was lucky enough to have the opportunity to teach a subject that his students generally found exciting.

He turned and unlocked his office door, leaving it open to keep in line with his open-door policy during his office hours (and any other time he happened to be in his office), which were about to start in five or six minutes.

His office, though already fairly small, looked a bit cluttered but he didn't mind. He quite liked it that way. Around his office were bookshelves filled with unorganized books going every which way, stacks of papers and folders and workbooks, various musical instruments, random clothes from the days that require layers, and a mix of easy-to-make dinners and snacks for the evenings that he stayed late at the office.

The walls were covered in thank-you notes, posters of local bands, framed photos of his class from each semester he taught, and above his desk was a large photo of him and his Uncle Jyrki. He kept it close so that he would always remember why he got into teaching...some days he really needed that.

He tossed the bookbag that hung over his shoulder onto the floor next to his messy desk. The whole place may look unorganized to someone else, but this was his type of environment and he knew where almost every single thing in his office was.

He pushed aside some papers, pulling out a folder from his bag and grabbing a pen from his desk. Might as well get started on giving feedback for some in-class assignments he'd given this week.

Holst found their way to a spot on a shelf where Kris had tossed one of his hoodies, getting comfortable and snuggling into the soft cotton.

Mollie was walking down the hall of the building where most of the eilemaiden offices were kept, checking room numbers as she went. Mr. Lilas had given a homework assignment today that Mollie was having a little trouble with, and she wanted to catch him at his office hours before the weekend started, so she was going now during her break period. She tried not to go to office hours if she could help it--she didn't like clio knowing when she needed help, but she also didn't want to look like an idiot getting a question or concept wrong when it could have been easily fixed by just asking for a little extra guidance.

234, 235, ah, here it was, room 236. Mollie looked up from her syllabus and to the wall to check one more time that it was the right room, but when she got to the door she realized it was open. Sure enough, Mr. Lilas was there, sitting at his desk, hunched over some papers.

Out of the three teachers that taught the senior Earalas course, everyone wanted to get Mr. Lilas. He had a bit of a reputation around Redfern of being one of the hot teachers, and Mollie had to admit that the students who said that about him weren't wrong. But besides being nice to look at, Mr. Lilas also really understood his eilemaiden and was a good teacher. It was only a few weeks into the semester and Mollie already found herself feeling engaged in the class; it was easy to want to do well.

She paused for a moment in the doorway and then rapped lightly on the open door. "Mr. Lilas?"

Kris looked up as soon as he heard a knock, something that only really happened at the beginning of the semester when his new students stopped by for the first time. He smiled warmly, seeing Mollie standing in the doorway.

"Hey Mollie," he said, greeting her as he quickly stood up from his chair. Kris spent a lot of time making sure that he learned the names of every single student in his classes within the first day or so -- he felt that it made a lasting difference in developing genuine relationships. He waved for her to come into the office. "Please, come on in."

He headed to the chair that faced his desk, which was completely buried in his miscellaneous junk. He tossed everything in seemingly random places, but there was a chaotic form of organization in his office. "Go ahead and sit down if you'd like," he said, gesturing to the chair. He remained standing, just in case she was there to ask a quick question. He liked being on the same level as his students.

"How's your final year starting? You ready to get the hell out of here already?" he said with a laugh.

"Hi," Mollie said with a smile as he greeted her. She walked in when he motioned to the chair, and sat down, swinging her backpack off her shoulder and sitting it on the floor next to her as she took a quick look around.

The room was...interesting, to say the least. Definitely a lot different than any other office she'd visited at Redfern. Usually Mollie wouldn't appreciate a mess, but for some reason the room just seemed perfect for Mr. Lilas. Controlled chaos, or something.

Mr. Lilas wrote:How's your final year starting? You ready to get the hell out of here already?

She laughed lightly. "Oh, it's going alright." Everything was great except history, but she was determined for that to get better too. "I can't believe time is going so fast!" she said. "Especially these last few weeks, there's so much going on!" Her teachers had been loading their classes with a bunch of work, which Mollie actually enjoyed, but she also realized she hadn't had much time to just sit down and reflect on the fact that this was her very last year here.

Kris laughed lightly as he took a seat at his desk and listened to Mollie. "You're telling me," he said. "The longer I teach here, the faster it seems like each semester goes. I feel like I'll blink and you'll have graduated already!"

He moved some of his papers out of the way so there was room on his desk for Mollie to set things down if she wanted to. "So," he started, closing his folder full of papers and putting it back in his bookbag. "I imagine you aren't here just to reflect on the pros and cons of senior year." Once the desk was decent, he gave his full attention back to Mollie. "What can I help you with?"

"Well don't go blinking just yet!" Mollie joked, "I'm not ready to leave!"

She smiled at him and watched as he moved all his stuff off the desk. Papers, folders, odds and ends. She wondered if it was hard for him to keep track of everything, especially since she imagined he had to move it any time a student came in for help.

"Oh, yeah, I just had a question," she said, reaching down to grab the her notebook and folder from Earalas class. She pulled out the assignment and slipped it onto the desk. "I was having a hard time with this, right here," she said, pointing to the concept she hadn't quite understood. She flipped open her notebook to the page where she'd been taking notes and looked through it, trailing a finger as she read her perfect scripted handwriting. "I thought I'd copied down everything you said in class, and I did the reading during my earlier break period, but I just..."

She looked back up at him with a hopeless sort of smile. "I've never been that great at my eilemaiden," she admitted.

"Not a problem, let's take a look," he said with a smile, pulling the assignment a bit closer to him so he could see. "Ah, yep -- this is some complicated stuff. We really jumped right in this semester."

He always expected this assignment to give students problems, and they usually addressed it in class thoroughly the next week. Most of his students didn't feel comfortable coming to office hours yet (unless they'd had him in class before), but he felt it was beneficial to get down and dirty early on in the semester so the students knew that this wasn't a class to coast through.

"So this is more about chemistry," he started, "which always gives folks trouble. This question is asking you to determine the rate of combustion, temperature, and reaction paths based on the provided color hues, oxygen supply, and fuel-oxygen pre-mixing."

He knew that probably sounded like mumbo jumbo, so he thought he would bring it back to some bigger concepts. "So this is all about finding various ways to approximate the temperature of a flame...why do you think it would be important or helpful for someone within the Earalas eilemaiden to know -- based on color hues or other notifiers -- the temperature of a flame?"

Kris was the kind of instructor who wanted to help students come to their own conclusions rather than just simply providing the answer. The equation itself wasn't what he wanted the students to learn necessarily; instead, he hoped to help them understand the applicability of being able to estimate the temperature of a flame.

Mollie nodded as Mr. Lilas broke the question down into something that was more understandable. The minute it finally clicked in her mind, she broke out into a smile. "Oh!" she said, looking back down at the paper to reread the question. "It totally makes sense now!" she exclaimed happily, looking back up at him.

"It's important to know the temperature of the flame you're working with so you know exactly what you can do with it." Fire was obviously dangerous and could cause a lot of destruction if you didn't know what you were doing. "Being able to tell the temperature without touching it would be useful to figure out what caused the fire and how much damage the fire could do." Chemical fires, electrical fires, other crazy types of fires...you couldn't control any of them if you didn't understand which type of fire it was, and to guess that from a distance you'd need to look for the small differences in hues and scents and the size of the flames.

"You know something?" Mollie said. "I picked Earalas because I couldn't really decide which eilemaiden I'd be the best at, so I just picked what my parents were and I've never really been that interested. But I think this is the first time that it's actually clicked."

Kris nodded along as Mollie verbally worked through some of her understanding of the material, and ultimately her own eilemaiden. This is what he absolutely loved about his job.

"Even when you don't consciously choose your eilemaiden, there's a reason," he said, completely excited and obviously passionate about the fact that Mollie was getting it. You could see it in his eyes and the smile he didn't even realize he had. "Maybe it seems like it was just because of your parents, but you know what?"

He started gesturing with his hands as he continued to talk and smile and shine. "You learned from your parents, whether you meant to or not. You understood what their eilemaiden could do, more than any. other. eilemaiden. You saw the application of the eilemaiden, the different ways that your parents used it, the way you imagined your own creations."

He sighed dreamily, grabbing a lone match on his desk and striking it on a random textured surface that was enough to start a spark. He grabbed the spark, holding a tightly concealed but bright flame between the clio, which warmed their faces and lit up their bodies. "Earalas is...awe-inspiring," he said in barely a whisper. "You chose it for a reason, I bet. More than you give yourself credit for."

Mollie was not expecting this sudden burst of passion from him, and started to react a little bit to the amount of pure cheese, but then she felt her pulse start to race a little bit when he got all quiet and started manipulating the tiniest little flame. It was almost magical, the way he spoke. So softly, but full of purpose and meaning. Awe-inspiring.

She looked from the flame back to Mr. Lilas, and realized how close they were, before drawing back a little. She hoped the warmness in her cheeks had just been from the proximity of the flame and wouldn't look flushed to him. Mollie didn't often get this open with anyone, definitely not a teacher. She'd never had that sort of advice or guidance before.

"Thank you," she told him, looking down at her lap and straightening out the skirt she wore so she wouldn't have to make eye contact with him right away after that too-intimate, intense conversation. "For, um, all of that," she added softly, looking back up. "And for the help. I appreciate it." She smiled at him.

Kris pulled his hand back toward himself, setting it in his lap as the flame he had been holding suddenly dissipated. He was almost embarrassed at how engulfed he'd gotten in the conversation.

"You're welcome," he said with a chuckle. "I get a bit too excited about all of this sometimes -- guess that's why I teach it." He looked back down at the worksheet she had placed on his desk.

"So, you feel a bit better about the assignment? You'll probably be the only one in class who knows what we're talking about next week." He smiled at her as a bell rang, signifying one minute until the next period.

That brought a brighter smile to Mollie's face. She lived to be at the top of her classes, and it was definitely why she had come to seek help, despite hating needing to. "I do," she told him. "And not about just the assignment; I think considering the science side actually made a lot of sense. I'm not sure why I never thought of that before."

Or why none of our other eilemaiden teachers bothered to make those connections. Olivier noted, echoing Mollie's own thoughts. It was definitely irritating--all this time she'd just been thinking everyone's eilemaiden came naturally. All her previous instructors had taught basic movements, but never theory. It seemed like a serious flaw in her education, honestly.

"But, I should probably go," she told Mr. Lilas, shuffling her things into her bag. "I do appreciate everything. I don't usually like coming to office hours, but I'm glad I did."

"That's great to hear! You're welcome to stop by anytime. If I'm here, my door is open."

He stood up as she did, walking her to the door. "Oh, and one more thing -- you don't have to call me Mr. Lilas outside of class. Kris is perfectly fine." He always got to a point in the semester where students understood that they didn't have to call him Mr. Lilas, but the students that stopped by early on were always made privy to that classroom norm before the others. He felt it broke down authoritative barriers and allowed for the development of more genuine and mutually beneficial relationships.

"See you next week, and stay safe this weekend," he said, pushing a lock of his messy and long blond hair behind his ear before slipping his hands in his pockets casually. For as lazy and disorganized as his appearance made him seem, he was incredibly thoughtful and intelligent, and he loved when students stopped by and got to interact with him in his own environment to see what he was really like. Most clio who stopped into his office left having learned something about their eilemaiden, and often times themselves.
