Hadley had spent the better part of his Sunday traveling to Martha's Vineyard to drop his constantly-in-trouble daughter Nat back off at school following her suspension. He had told Remy he would try his best to act at least a little disappointed in her, but by the end of the journey the two of them were laughing and talking about how old Headmaster Bellomy was (seriously, that guy had been about a hundred back when Hadley was in school). At the very least, he did get her to promise she would try not to get suspended again this semester.

While he was here at Redfern, he figured he would also stop in and visit his good, well-behaved daughter Mollie. He'd wanted all three of them to spend some time together, but Nat had too much to catch up on (not that she'd actually turn in half the work she missed), and so she had run off as soon as she was done showing Hadley to Mollie's dorm.

So it was just him and Mollie, walking through town for a bit before Hadley would have to catch a balloon (ugh) back to Earalas. He held onto Mollie's arm since he wasn't super familiar with the area. He used to come downtown all the time as a teenager, but that had been so long ago he could only vaguely picture it. "Pretty crazy that it's your last year," he said to Mollie. It felt like just yesterday he had been dropping her off for her first year :(. "You think you're gonna miss it here?"

Mollie hadn't been surprised when she'd learned last weekend that Nat had already been in trouble at school. She was surprised though, happily so, that her dad had been the one to drop her sister back off at school. Usually their mom was the one that came to school to listen to whatever teacher wanted to complain about Nat. Now Mollie and her dad were walking around downtown, enjoying the nice salty breeze that wafted through the streets.

Dad wrote:Pretty crazy that it's your last year. You think you're gonna miss it here?

"Hmmm, sometimes I think yes, and sometimes I think no," she told him. "I will definitely miss Martha's Vineyard." She and her dad were strolling down a street that Mollie had walked so many times in her last eight years it felt like she could do it blindfolded. In some ways this island was more home than Earalas was. "But I'm also kinda excited to just get out there."

Hadley smiled at that, though he was a little sad. He knew Mollie wanted to move to Lilycove after she graduated, which was just so far from Earalas. He wished she'd choose to stay closer to home, but he wasn't about to stop her. She'd talked about her dream of moving to Lilycove for years now. So ambitious, this daughter of his. "And you'll do great out there," he told her.

"I never missed school after I left, myself." Of course, he had immediately been handed a bunch of money and power at sixteen years old. Who would miss school, compared to that? "But I hadn't exactly been the best student back then, either." Nothing like Mollie, who was at the top of nearly all her classes.

Mollie smiled brightly at the compliment. Sometimes it felt like her parents didn't really care about how hard she worked all the time. Her mom seemed to just expect it from her, and grades and things never really seemed important to her dad. He was much more into the music that Nat played than anything Mollie had ever done. The recognition from him felt nice.

"You like being in charge too much to ever miss Redfern, Dad," Mollie told him with a laugh. She couldn't even imagine her dad sitting in classes at school. He'd probably been exactly like Nat--always in trouble or missing from class.

Hadley laughed too. "This is true," he agreed. Following other peoples' rules had never come easy to him. "Mr. Bellomy wasn't my biggest fan. I still remember the look on his face when the old Earalas adviser came to tell me I was the new overloridian. Like the world was coming to an end." Thinking back to his teenage self, he could kind of understand where old Bellomy was coming from, now.

"Was that, like, the best day ever?" Mollie asked. She would never want to be an overloridian, herself, but she was glad that her dad was. She got all the benefits without any of that boring work. It was really nice to be rich and live in a mansion and all that jazz.

"Oh, definitely," Hadley said. "I mean, the day you were born was okay and all, but becoming overloridian was easily the best day of my life." He smiled and spoke in a very non-serious tone of voice to make it clear he was only joking. While becoming the overloridian had probably been the most incredible shock of his life, if he ever had to choose between keeping his family or the overloridianship, he would choose his family without even thinking about it.

Mollie shoved her dad lightly, and said, "Oh, please. We all know I'm the best thing that's ever happened to you," she said with a laugh and a flip of her hair.

This felt good. She liked it when it was just her and her dad. Not that she didn't love her mom or sister, but whenever they were around Mollie felt second best. It was easy to joke with him now, though, just the two of them.

"Oh my gosh, I forgot to tell you," she said suddenly. "You will never guess who is my history partner." She only paused for half a second before following up with, "James." She said his name with complete disgust. "It is the absolute worst thing ever. He is so horrible."

Well that certainly wiped the smile off of Hadley's face quickly enough. "Who is your history teacher?" he asked immediately. "I can talk to them if you want, get them to change your partner assignment."

It really pissed Hadley off how James treated Mollie and Nat. It pissed him off how the brat treated everyone, but especially his daughters. Hadley also knew how much doing well in school meant to Mollie, and even though he really didn't care what grades she got, he knew she would be upset if being partnered with James caused her to get a bad grade on a big assignment.

Elation was Mollie's first emotion after her dad offered to help her out, and she almost cheered before taking a moment to actually think about it. Mollie did want a new partner, but if she let her dad bully Ms. Henley into giving her a new one that meant someone else in the class was gonna get stuck with James. And also, James would know she'd somehow gotten herself out of the pairing. Would his embarrassing attitude get worse if that happened?

"I dunno, Dad," Mollie said more seriously. "Maybe I should just deal with it. He's annoying but I feel like doing that might just make history class even worse." If someone else got paired with James they'd probably fail the project for sure, but Mollie would make sure that didn't happen to her; even if she had to do it all herself.

Hadley seriously doubted that, but Mollie was old enough to make her own decision on the matter. "If you say so," he said, still frowning. Mollie was headstrong enough to handle James on her own, he knew, but it would be so easy just to have her teacher switch the class partners. Mollie had never been one to take the easy road, though.

"You know, I once tried to do something nice for your Uncle Lysander and let him stay with your mom and me for a while," he said. James had taken after his father 100%. "It did not end well."

Hadley, that is so not the full story, Nila said disapprovingly. While Hadley mostly held back on badmouthing Lysander around the girls, he sometimes let his obvious dislike show in front of Mollie. Plus, he just wanted to subtly warn her to not let herself get screwed over by a Sparkes.

"Really?" Mollie asked, steering her dad over to a little food truck so they could order something to eat. "I didn't know that. Why would you ever let him stay at our house?" Uncle Lysander was annoying and Mollie always got the feeling that her dad couldn't stand him.

Hadley turned with Mollie as she guided him in another direction. He heard the sizzle of a grill and smelled something delicious. Food wouldn't be a bad idea before his long trip home. "It was a favor to your mom, actually," he said, sighing rather dramatically, as if he had made some huge sacrifice by letting Lysander have a room at the estate.

You gonna mention how she had to practically force you to agree? Nila asked. Hadley ignored her.

"They'd only just met back then, and she wanted to get to know him." Hadley wouldn't tell his kids the full truth, about how Lysander had essentially tricked Remy into giving him a free place to live, among other things. It was too personal to Remy, and it would be up to her whether or not she ever told the girls.

He was glad that Mollie shared his view on Lysander. Lysander and Remy were still close, and Nat inexplicably liked him too. And who even knew what the hell Nora saw in him.

The two ordered something to eat and then Mollie guided her dad over to a little park area (apparently they're close to the end of town lol) so they could sit at a picnic table.

"You know what I don't get?" Mollie asked, wiping her mouth with a napkin. "How Aunt Nora puts up with him. We have to, but I just don't get the appeal if you weren't forced." She shook her head. "Love's weird, Dad."

Mollie both loved and looked up to her Aunt Nora a lot, but that was something she'd just never understand.

Hadley laughed. "I don't understand it either," he said. Somewhere deep down he knew it was probably wrong of him to make fun of Lysander with Mollie like this, but he couldn't help himself. Besides, what was the harm? "Aunt Nora is a saint, is all I can figure."

"Love is weird," he agreed. "I never used to think I'd ever fall in love, and now your mom and I have been married for seventeen years."

Mollie breathed out a laugh as she took another bite of her food. "I can't even imagine you guys apart," she told him after she swallowed. Her mom and dad had always seemed like best friends, and Mollie loved it. That's what she wanted for herself eventually, whenever she had time to actually acknowledge the presence of boys.

"You know, I should get some sort of award or something," she said. "You told me 'absolutely no dating at Redfern!' and look, I made it!" Sure, there had been dates here and there, but Mollie had always broken it off before anything got serious. There was just no one here that she was interested in; the boys here were so immature, and that was just a total turn off for her.

"Oh come on, I never said that," Hadley said, amused, in between bites of food. Unless he had said it jokingly when she was young, in which case he didn't remember. He didn't mind if Mollie wanted to date, as long as the boy (or girl) in question treated her well and wasn't a creep or something.

Hadley himself had never dated anyone until Remy--if one would even call that dating. They'd already lived together for five years when they got together, then they went on a couple dates, broke up, got back together, got accidentally pregnant, and the rest was history. He had definitely never dated while in school, at least not in any serious capacity.

Mollie shrugged with a smile and a small laugh. "Okay, maybe I was the one that told myself that." From a young age she'd been very no-nonsense, and despite wanting a love like her parents shared, she wasn't interested in actually looking for it. It'd find her, or it wouldn't. In the meantime, she'd be too busy working her butt off to accomplish her other plans.

"You're lucky you found Mom. I don't know if anyone else could have put up with you," she said jokingly, after taking a sip of her water. "Although, to be fair, I think the same about her."

"I tell myself that every day," Hadley said, thinking fondly of Remy. They still had their differences every so often (what couple didn't?), but at this point it was hard to imagine life without her. "Though it did take us about five years to realize we should probably be together."

He was glad Mollie was so independent and sure of herself, it was a good way to go through life. She relied on herself for her happiness and well-being, and so he didn't feel like he had to worry (as much) about her going off on her own in a year. The two of them finished up their food and, unfortunately, due to the time Hadley had to head out to an air balloon station to make it back home.
