    coffee mix-up :: axel

Post by Poppy Selway-Sommers on Sat Aug 12, 2017 1:08 pm

Coffee. The third week of classes at Redfern had been grueling, and it seemed like coffee was the only thing getting Poppy by, these days. It wasn't even that she wanted to get super good grades or anything, it just seemed like all the teachers were piling on all the work. At least today was Friday--after Poppy got her (way too expensive) french vanilla latte, she had a date with the beach.

She stood in line, waiting patiently, when the clerk at Moondoe finally called "Poppy!". She smiled and walked up to the counter. "Thanks, bro," she told him, grabbing the latte and a sleeve for the too-hot cup. She took a sip as she turned to leave, expecting a smooth (if burning) vanilla taste, but was greeted by the nasty taste of coffee that was too much coffee and not enough anything else.

"Gods," she sputtered, sticking her tongue out. She held the cup up and peered under the sleeve. Axel. She shook her head. "Blech." Poppy looked around and saw a boy a few feet away with the same sort of look she imagined was on her own face. Disgust and disappointment.

"Dude, are you Axel?" she asked, walking up to him. "I think I got your cup of slime." She held up the cup with an expectant, teasing smile.

It was Day Two of Axel's adventures at Martha's Vineyard with his mom, his mom's new man, and his mom's new man's son. He was having a pretty good time so far, it was nice to have someone his own age to hang out with, even if that someone was a little antisocial and always in a bad mood. Hah, but really, Elias wasn't so bad now that Axel was getting to know him more.

Right now though, Elias was in class, Aunt Pia was teaching, and Axel didn't feel like hanging out with his mom and Henri anymore, so he decided to do some exploring on his own. He went to campus and stopped by another coffee shop, since it was morning and he was still tired.

As soon as he took a drink, he knew he hadn't gotten what he'd ordered (normal fucking coffee). It was some coffee-flavored-sugar-milk type drink, definitely not what he'd been expecting. He glanced at the cup and shook his head in amusement when he saw the name written there. Poppy. Did he look like a Poppy?

Girl wrote:"Dude, are you Axel? I think I got your cup of slime."

He looked up. "No, clearly my name is Poppy," he said, holding up 'his' cup. "See?" Clearly she was the actual Poppy and their drinks had gotten mixed up--wait. Poppy. Something had been nagging in the back of his head since he saw the name on the cup, and he was just now realizing why. The name sounded familiar. He had just heard it, from Elias of all clio, talking about his cousin yesterday.

"Wait, are you Poppy Selway?" he blurted out. "I'm not being creepy, I promise. I'm friends with your cousin."

Poppy let out a quiet laugh when he claimed to be called Poppy. She opened her mouth to offer an equally witty response when he suddenly asked her name.

"Selway-Sommers," she corrected. "And you are Axel, Stealer of French Vanilla Lattes, right? I think my cousin may have mentioned you to me, too." She smiled, letting him know that she was just kidding around rather than being sarcastic.

"How do you know Kinley?" she asked, handing Axel his cup and taking hers.

Heh, this girl seemed kinda fun. Definitely nothing like Elias.

He looked at her, slightly confused, when she asked how he knew "Kinley." Oh, that must be a different cousin or something. One who probably had more friends than Elias (did Elias have friends?). "Oh, no, different cousin. Elias," he explained. "Henri's son?"

Poppy raised an eyebrow. "Elias talks about me?" she asked, unconvinced. Elias hadn't had a willing conversation with her in literal years, and not for lack of trying on Poppy's part. "Odd," she added, shrugging a shoulder flippantly. She wasn't about to dive into family history with the latte thief.

She took a sip of her coffee and closed her eyes before sighing dramatically. "Ah, sweet caffeine, what would I do without you." She kissed the cup when she pulled away, a playfully smitten look on her face, before turning to look back at Axel. "Oh, you're still here?" she asked, as if she'd completely forgotten about him whilst speaking to her coffee. "Come on, then," she added, waving him along so they could sit at a little table.

"So, Axel-Poppy," Poppy-Poppy said after they sat, "why have I not seen you around before?" She knew a lot of the older guys, if not by name, then by sight--and Poppy thought she would remember this face. It was a cute one.

Poppy-Poppy wrote:"Elias talks about me? Odd."

"He mentioned you in passing." Axel shrugged. Her, and her brother and sister.

He watched her, amused, as she had an intimate moment with her coffee right in front of him. He decided he definitely wouldn't mind talking with this girl a bit more, so when she waved him over to a table he followed. "Actually it's Poppy-Axel," he said with a smile. "And I don't go here. I live in Ughdarras, I'm just visiting my aunt. She's a teacher here, Pia Lovison?"

"Semantics," Poppy said, rolling her eyes and waving it off. "That, however, is interesting," she told him of his proclamation of Ms. Lovison being his aunt. "Cute boy comes to island to visit cool teacher aunt, meets cute girl by a twist of fate showing itself as a coffee mix-up, and then he later meets up with cute girl at the bars...or something like that, right?"

She smiled at him and took a drink of her coffee. "I should probably preface that by saying I'll be at the bars tonight, if you think you'll have time to escape the cool teacher aunt.

"Anyway, if you live in Ughdarras, how do you know Uncle Henri and Elias?"

Oh wow, Poppy was bold. Axel kinda liked that. Meeting up with her at the bars sounded like it could be a pretty awesome time. "I think I might be able to find some time for that," he said, returning her smile.

Poppy wrote:"Anyway, if you live in Ughdarras, how do you know Uncle Henri and Elias?"

"Apparently your uncle and my mom are old friends," Axel replied, using their words. "He came here with us and introduced us to Elias."

Interesting. "The plot thickens," she said. While both her siblings had read their father's memoir, Poppy had not been able to bring herself to do so. However, she still knew the gist of his past, and so knew that her dad and Uncle Henri had spent pretty much every moment together up until her mom and dad met. Which meant "I bet you anything your mom knows my dad, then.

"I wonder why we got shafted on the reunion."

"Yeah, yeah, she told me stories about Henri and his brother. Your dad, I guess. And your mom too," Axel said. He wouldn't describe them as the most flattering of stories, but Axel was aware enough to see through his mom's biases to get the impression that Poppy's parents were probably actually very nice. "She said they were...nice."

He hadn't realized that Henri hadn't said anything to his nieces and nephews about the so-called reunion. Oops. Maybe he shouldn't have said anything, but it was too late now. "Hm. Well. It was super last minute, he probably just didn't think he'd have time."

"I get the feeling you don't actually mean that," Poppy said, sitting back in her chair. She folded her legs up underneath her. Her parents mostly couldn't be described as anything but nice, so the way Axel had to fish around and then settle on the word was interesting indeed.

"But don't worry about the lack of invite on my part," she told him, taking the lid off her latte so she could blow on it a little. "Elias, not sure if you noticed, has a thing against family." Poppy had spent much time with her aunt, uncle, and cousin while the cousins were growing up, but after Aunt Estela (Poppy's namesake and best friend) had gone missing four years ago, Elias had decided he wanted nothing to do with her (or the rest of the family--Uncle Henri, included, for that matter). The last time they'd been close was before Redfern, and life before Redfern seemed like a different life, anyway.

Poppy wrote:"I get the feeling you don't actually mean that."

Axel gave a little laugh. "Perceptive," he said. "Okay, maybe 'nice' wasn't one of the exact words she used. But I'm sure they are nice. She told me about how they all helped those kidnapped Redfern kids together." Among other things. Because his mom's life had been literally insane, and that was just one of the insane things that had happened.

Pops wrote:"Elias, not sure if you noticed, has a thing against family."

"Yyyyyeah, it's a little hard not to notice," Axel said with a nod. "I don't really get why though. Your uncle is like, the nicest dude I've ever met. And you're obviously cool."

Though given Elias' personality, Axel supposed he could see why he wouldn't choose to hang out with Poppy. Not that there was anything wrong with her, far from it, she just seemed very bold and outspoken, and Elias didn't seem like the type who could deal with someone like that. Axel himself had felt like he'd had to walk on eggshells around certain topics just to avoid irritating him.

Poppy nodded, with a smile. "You're right, they are." When Axel mentioned the rescue mission after the Battle of Redfern, she tried to remember what she'd learned in history. Marisol Pendant, the first lady (?) of Cuir, had been involved, but that obviously couldn't be his mother if he lived in Ughdarras (and, because, well, Poppy already knew the Pendant boys).

"You know, I don't think I know anything about your mom," Poppy said. It was possible her parents had mentioned her--Poppy admittedly didn't pay much attention when it came to her dad's terribly horrifying and sad past. The first time she'd found out about it all she'd spent the next few nights crying herself asleep thinking about it, and had done her best not to think about it in detail since then.

Axel wrote:Yyyyyeah, it's a little hard not to notice. I don't really get why though. Your uncle is like, the nicest dude I've ever met. And you're obviously cool.

Poppy didn't want to bring Aunt Estela into the mix, so she shrugged. "He's a moody jerk," she said simply.

"Anyway," Poppy told Axel, trying to change the subject away from sad pasts and older cousins, "if your aunt teachers here, why don't you go to Redfern?"

Popcorn wrote:"You know, I don't think I know anything about your mom."

"Her name is Petra Lovison, if that helps," Axel said, figuring it probably wouldn't. Though his mom was pretty open and honest about her past, he could get why not everyone would be. "Her and your dad and uncle would have, uh, grown up together." He didn't wanna come out and say they had all been kidnapped together, because he wasn't sure how much Poppy even knew about that. But if she did know, she'd get his meaning from what he said.

    Poppy wrote:"He's a moody jerk."

    Axel laughed again, in agreement.

Popper wrote:"Anyway, if your aunt teachers here, why don't you go to Redfern?"

"Welllll," Axel said slowly. He didn't wanna go into the full story, so he decided to give Poppy the abridged version. "My first year I sorta got in some trouble. Dumb kid stuff, you know. It was this whole thing. My mom didn't like how the school handled it, so she pulled me out and I went to school in Ughdarras." And then I dropped out there too, yaaay.

The name didn't ring a bell, but Poppy knew she was right to try to steer the conversations direction away when he mentioned her dad and uncle had grown up with Axel's mom. She nodded and took a sip of her coffee, turning to look at the window they were sitting against. Students were everywhere outside, reveling in the freedom that Friday afternoon brought. Annnnnd that reminded her--she'd been headed to the beach to meet up her friendos.

"I see," she said, turning back to look at him. "So the trouble making isn't a new thing, then? I'd ask you if you've been thieving coffee since you were ten, but unfortunately I did tell my friends I would meet up with them after I grabbed this latte." She held up the nearly empty cup and lifted her shoulders in apology.

"But I definitely expect to see you out tonight," she reminded him with a smile and a slightly raised eyebrow as she stood to leave.
